Provides support for adults who wish to brush
up on their skills in:
As the Local Statutory Education and Training Authority,
Co. Leitrim V.E.C. provides a comprehensive educational service
throughout the county. Services are provided in the following
areas:
• Reading
• Writing
• Spelling
• Form filling
• Preparing C.V.'s
• Letter writing
• Language Skills
• Maths
• Computers
We provide help with the following:
• Reading books and newspapers
• Helping children with homework
• Writing a note to the teacher
• Reading and writing letters
• Understanding and filling in forms
• Reading instructions
• Reading and writing at work
• Writing reports
• Help with basic maths
• Support for those returning to education (e.g. VTOS,
Institute of Technology Foundation Course)
Training and Development:
• Tuition is free and confidential.
• The scheme is ‘learner centred’ and the
tuition is tailored to suit the needs and wants of the student.
• Students are given the choice of 1:1 or group tuition
and can also opt for accreditation.
• LEAP runs training courses annually in Carrick and
Manorhamilton.
• Anyone can take part in the tutor training course.
• WIT accreditation can only be achieved when a tutor
has a student and completed the required assignments
• The LEAP Scheme specialises in the area of SLD/Dyslexia
and provides training to tutors throughout Ireland in this
area.
We also provide the following services:
• English as a second language (English for Speakers
of other languages- ESOL) for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and
Migrant Workers
• FETAC (Further Education and Training Awards Council)
Foundation to Level 4
• Help with filling in Farming Forms
• Basic computer classes for those with literacy difficulties
• Help with Driver Theory Test
Additional Programmes
FAS/VEC Return to Education Programme
The Return to Education Programme is a joint Initiative between
FAS and the VEC. This project is aimed at participants on
the Community Employment (CE) Programmes.
Participants are released from their Community Employment
work for 9 hours per week over a 30- week period.
The FAS/VEC Return to Education Programme aims to provide
help for participants to achieve significant improvement in
their reading and writing skills, which will further enhance
their opportunities in seeking employment and/ or further
education and training.
Course Content:
English, Mathematics, Communications, Computers, Personal
Development and Job Orientation Skills.
Workplace Learning- Local Authority/ VEC Initiative
The Return to Learning Initiative provides opportunities
for Local Authority employees to attend a workplace basic
skills course. The objective of the Workplace literacy programme
is to create a 'safe' and supportive learning environment
for staff.
The local Authority employees are released from the workplace
for 4 hours per week, over a 20-week period
Family Learning
Family Learning courses are run to show parents how to make
learning at home fun.
